Community Arts Programming & Gallery Curation

Public Library · 2023 — Present

Background

Public libraries are more than repositories for books. They are community gathering spaces, and visual art plays a powerful role in making those spaces feel alive and welcoming. When I assumed leadership of the art and display committees, I saw an opportunity to formalize and expand what had been an informal, ad hoc approach to arts programming.

What I Built

Artist Recruitment Pipeline

I developed a structured recruitment process, including a “Call for Artists” brochure that was distributed to local arts organizations, community centers, and social media channels. This replaced the previous word-of-mouth approach and dramatically expanded the pool of interested artists.

The library’s gallery space had been limited to a single floor. I advocated for and implemented an expansion to the third floor, creating a dedicated space for children’s art. This gave young artists visibility alongside adult exhibitors and reinforced the library’s commitment to all-ages creativity.

Year-Round Programming

By booking all two-dimensional artists for the 2024 season, I ensured continuous, rotating exhibitions throughout the year. Each exhibition was paired with a reception event, creating regular opportunities for community gathering and artist engagement.

Impact

The arts programming has become one of the library’s most visible community touchpoints. Patron feedback on themed displays — including a particularly well-received horror-themed display — has been consistently positive. The program demonstrates that libraries can be vibrant cultural venues, not just quiet study spaces.
